Reporting directly to the Foreman or designee, the Operator performs work of a technical and laborious nature. The Operator will work for both the Water and Sewer utilities.
Accurately and completely maintains the quantity and quality of water supply as well as ensures functionality of the sanitary sewer system.
Some examples of the specific tasks performed by the position include:
- Performs routine inspection of reservoir areas, including dams and intake structures; enters data in logs provided, directs and/or operates diversions as required.
- Investigation of customer complaints of water quality, pressure, consumption and similar issues for resolution of problems.
- Performs work of a highly technical nature within District water supply, treatment, and distribution facilities, as required, investigate and resolve malfunctions or sub-standard performance of process equipment.
- Plans and schedules preventative and corrective maintenance of facilities and equipment; maintain records.
- Maintains records of water quality, supply, treatment, pumping and distribution properly scheduled and completed in accordance with District policy and State of Connecticut Department of Public Health regulations.
- As required, inspect new connections to District facilities to assure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
- Responds to emergencies as required.
- As required, inspect, maintain, and repair the sanitary sewer system. Maintain records.
- Performs laborious, sometimes repetitive, duties including but not limited to hand excavation, carrying heavy materials, painting, mowing, landscaping, and standing for extended periods of time.
Must be qualified in the use of specialized equipment and instruments, as required, in performing the various job activities. Examples include tapping machines, underground utility locating devices, testing of backflow- prevention devices, as well as utilizing computers and tablets for daily duties.
The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, self-motivated, organized, and have the desire to create a long-term career within the company. Prior experience in water supply operations preferred. Experience in plumbing, electrical, machine repair, operating heavy machinery, and construction is desirable.
Special Requirements: Must possess Certification as Water Treatment Plant Operator (Class I), Distribution System Operator (Class II), General Backflow Preventer Tester and Cross Connection Survey Inspector, all issued by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health. If the applicant does not currently possess all certifications listed above, the applicant will be expected to obtain all required certifications within the earliest possible timeframe dictated by experience requirements for each certificate.
